LONDON | Black Axe Mangal Islington is a small establishment that marries metal music with modern Turkish inspired food for something really quite unique in London. Lee Tiernan (ex St John Bread & Wine), and his wife and business partner Kate Mullinger Tiernan are the brains behind Black Axe Mangal and have created something that doesn’t follow the rules at all. The penis graffiti outside, wood fired oven covered in Kiss decals, and loud heavy rock/metal sountrack set the scene for what’s to come as soon as you walk inside.

The menu is small – a few flatbreads, sides and mains, with each dish providing a different assault on the senses. The menu rotates so you’re not always guaranteed to see the same thing. The flatbread is fantastic, a potato and spelt flour version inspired by Chad Robertson of Tartine Bakery that’s soft, fluffy and perfectly crisped. Topping wise, it’s hard to go past the lamb offal option with its delectable pieces of offal cooked with citrus, hot spices and red onion and, if it’s available the squid ink and cod roe is fantastic too.

Looking at mains, the buttermilk fried quail with Mission spice is flavoursome, with the crispy, numbing Sichuan coating inspired by Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco. Other popular options worth looking out for are the BAM Reuben and the Pig’s Head, Scallop and Chilli.

The drinks menu is also small but does the trick. The three cocktails are by White Lyan’s Ryan Chetiyawardana and there are two beers, a red wine, a white wine and Jameison.

Black Axe Mangal is loud, audacious, fun and tasty. Oh and they also do takeaway.
