MELBOURNE | Eat’aliano by Pino is an authentic Italian restaurant located in the food and drink hub of Windsor, a stone throw from bustling Chapel Street. All of the restaurants’ recipes have been carefully developed by co-owners Alessio Alia and Head Chef Pino Russo. With a focus on fresh flavours, Eat’aliano’s philosophy is to ‘eat Italian cuisine in an Italian setting, prepared and served by Italians.

The interior of Eat’aliano is warm and inviting, with an immensely homely feel. The walls are lined with Italian wines and packaged food products and plants hang from the ceilings in wooden crates. The menu provides something for everyone, with traditional pizza, pasta, salads and antipasti, as well as an extremely tempting drinks and desserts selection. Moreover, the friendly and welcoming waiters add to the dining experience, offering recommendations on dishes and explaining the ingredients and processes implemented to create them.

At the beginning of the evening we were presented with tasty gin and elderflower cocktails, made especially for us. As an entree we chose the Calamari Fritti, made up of deep fried calamari rings with mayonnaise and lemon zest. This dish was tender and crispy, with a hint of chilli. We couldn’t resist ordering the Le 3 Carni pizza, with San Marzano tomato, mozzarella, ham, salami and sausage. The pizza base was light, thin and crispy, showcasing the high quality and well-rested dough used to create them. The pizza was cooked to perfection in the restaurants impressive wood fire oven, whilst each of the toppings complimented each other.

The first main course we chose was the special of the day, sous-vide duck breast with orange sauce, cocktail potatoes, shallots and spring onions. The duck was immensely soft and tender, as well as juicy, offset beautifully by the potatoes and shallots. The sauce presented a tasty fusion of flavours, bringing the whole meal together effortlessly.

My first choice from the menu was vegan and vegetarian dish, Gnocchi Alla Zucca, Amaretti e Pistacchio; homemade gnocchi with pumpkin and ginger sauce, topped with crushed pistachio, amaretti and pecorino cheese. Extremely satisfying, creamy and bursting with sweetness and flavour, this hearty, warming dish is ideal for a cold winter evening. To compliment our meals we had Negroni cocktails, recommended by the waiter. These drinks certainly pack a punch, definitely a must try!
