LOS ANGELES | Golden Road Brewing Glendale offers a simple proposition to visitors, and that’s the opportunity to drink great beers and eat top notch pub food in a vibrant, friendly space. Co-founders Tony Yanow (Mohawk Bend, Tony’s Darts Away) and Meg Gill modeled the space after the large, spacious bier halls of central Europe with a decidedly LA twist. Large communal tables encourage group interaction and joviality and there are lots of TV screens showing sports, along with more seating outdoors. It’s the kind of place where everyone is welcome – sports fans, families with children (there’s a dedicated play area) and anyone else just looking to hang out and have a good time.

The beers on offer across the 20 taps span many different styles, and from the core range that’s on tap year round to the limited and seasonal offering, you won’t be short of options. We’re particularly fond of the ‘Wolf Among Weeds IPA’ and the ‘Get Up Offa That Brown’ from the core range, and, if it’s available when you visit, the ‘Back Home Gingerbread Stout’ is unique and delicious. If you can’t decide what to try, there’s always the option of a tasting flight. If you’re the non-beer drinker of the group, the short wine list features a handful of quality local drops.

Food wise, the seasonal, local produce driven menu is a bit unfocused but, like Yanow’s Mohawk Bend, features a lot of tasty items to keep both vegans and meat eaters satisfied. Try the house made made mac ‘n’ cheese served in a pretzel bowl topped with bacon and parmesan, or the Chicano sandwich with Achiote marinated chicken breast, manchego cheese, red onion, tomato, fresh cilantro, and cumin lime aioli on a French bun.

Tours are offered three times a day from Friday to Sunday, and there are a range of activities offered weekly like live band karaoke (every Monday at 9pm) and Trivia Nights (every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays). Also note that you can purchase takeaways if you’re just passing through.

If you can’t get out to Glendale, there’s also the Golden Road 20-tap beer and pierogi stall at the Grand Central Markets downtown, which is more convenient but doesn’t have the same feel about it. There’s also a taproom in Anaheim opening soon.

Finally, to address the elephant in the room. Yes, Golden Road was sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev in September 2015, and to some people this is a deterrent. As far as we’re concerned, the beer still tastes great, we still love the brewery space, lots of locals are still employed, and the greater availability of Golden Road beers means that more people are likely to try craft beer, and make the switch from commercial lagers, trying many other, independent craft beers too. Surely the pros outweigh the cons.
