MELBOURNE | Kirk’s Wine Bar has been a popular spot for a few years now, but since late last year, it’s expanded to include a new venue, Kirk’s. Located just across from Kirk’s Wine Bar (and above the wine bar’s cellar), Kirk’s is, you guessed it, a pub. Located in a former tent shop, the space is reminiscent of a modern French cafe. Wood paneling dominates the walls, and the curved wooden bar exudes style. The 12 sleek sliver beer taps retain the classy look and feature no branding. An outdoor courtyard offers tables and seats and the perfect space to people watch while having a drink.
The tap and bottle list is impressive for featuring many beers that aren’t on the usual beer list. While most places that focus on the craftier end of beer feature pale ales, IPAs and other beers from Australian, Kiwi, British and American breweries, Kirk’s features a number of French and Belgian brews, some classic and some modern. When we visited we enjoyed a Gavroche from Brasserie De Saint-Sylvestre and a Tzara from Thornbridge Brewing.
The beer list features other stuff too, particularly British brews, and those who are after a local hoppy drop are catered to as well. The place might exude French chic, but it’s totally casual and unpretentious.
The food is simple pub grub done right, influenced by the pubs that owner Ian Curley frequented back home in the UK. Whether its a pork pie, croques monsieu, plughman’s lunch, or just a simple packet of crisps you want to enjoy with your beer, Kirk’s has the essentials covered.
