PERTH | Little Matcha Girl is a cute little cafe in Como that focuses on Japanese-style drinks and desserts including, as the name suggests, creations featuring matcha. Unlike many places that have jumped onto the matcha bandwagon in recent years, owner Stefanie Wee the crew at Little Matcha girl are about more than just jumping on a trend. The matcha they use is sourced from a single family run farm in Japan, and delivered fresh every few weeks. Just like in Japan, the focus isn’t on sweetness, but balance the compliments the earthiness of the matcha.
Cakes are created by Spanish pastry chef Marta Sirvent (ex Gordon Street Garage) and combine Japanese flavours with traditional European techniques. The Matcha Opera Bar contains layers of green tea sponge, chocolate ganache, and green tea buttercream and is very tasty, while the Raspberry Lychee Gâteau is utterly divine, featuring light tangy raspberry mousse sandwiched between a vanilla sponge and lychee jelly, garnished with meringue and freeze-dried raspberries.
If you want a regular coffee, beans are sourced from South Perth’s Blacklist Coffee Roasters, making the espresso based drinks top quality. The loose leaf teas on offer at Little Matcha Girl are great too, and are sourced from an independent family farm outside Kyoto.
