SAN DIEGO | Modern Times Brewery opened in Point Loma in 2013 and within a year had built a reputation as one of the best new breweries of that year. The warehouse spot very much feels like something that’s been cobbled together, with a bit of a 1970s literary theme. On one wall is a mural from in house designer and artist Amy Krone that is made from more than 12,000 Post-It notes.
As well as being a beer brewery, Modern Times is also a coffee roaster and brewer. Not only is the earlier mentioned Amy Krone in charge of design at Modern Times, she’s also the master coffee roaster. At the brewery you can find freshly roasted coffee beans for sale, as well as pour-overs, cold brews, espresso based drinks, and coffee on nitro taps. Modern Times even experiments with ageing coffee in barrels.
Back to the beer though, and across the venue’s 32 taps you’ll find core range beers, unique variations on the core beers, pilot batches, and mysterious experiments. The coffee beers are an obvious highlight – the year-round oatmeal stout ‘Black House’ includes a blend of 75 percent Ethiopian coffees and 25 percent Sumatran coffees and is delicious. Other great beers are the highly regarded Blazing World, a hoppy amber, and Fortunate Islands, a hoppy wheat beer. As usual, we recommend starting off with a few tastes to get acquainted with the depth and variety of what Modern Times is doing.
If you want to start getting interesting, try (if they’re on at the time) the BBA Devil’s Teeth with vanilla and almond, a hybrid imperial stout on nitro, or the Prometheus Effect, an Amphora-aged saison. Both great beers that will challenge and excite your taste buds.
There’s no kitchen on site, but you’re free to bring in your own food or order delivery. Modern Times also have a location in North Park, where you can find 16 of their beers on tap, along with coffee beans and merch for sale.
