MELBOURNE | Whenever we visit Singapore, one of the first things we do is head to one of our many favourite chicken rice place for a plate of the good stuff. When we want chicken rice in Melbourne, it’s a lot harder to find, but a recent tip off from a friend has made things a lot easier. Mr Loy’s Puff in South Melbourne is a small, unassuming venue on City Road that has a small menu featuring Singaporean hakwer favourites. Hainanese chicken rice, curry puffs, nasi lemak and the occasional curry, laksa, beef rendang etc.

When we visited, we went for both the traditional poached and the roast chicken rice, along with a couple of curry puffs. The chicken on both versions of the chicken rice is perfectly cooked and served on the bone, but if we had to choose a winner it’d be the poached version which is the more tender of the two. The rice is cooked just like you’d expect with nice flavour and the full set of condiments – soy sauce, chilli and chicken broth are served on the side. Moving on to the curry puff, and there are no complaints here – the pastry is buttery and flaky while the filling is full of chunky potato and chicken with a mild spice.

While not quite at the level of the best stuff we’ve had in Sinagpore, the chicken rice at Mr Loy’s is very tasty and amongst the best we’ve had in Melbourne. We’ll thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back again.

And if you were wondering who Mr Loy is, well owner Russel, who came to Melbourne to study and decided to stay, used to enjoy getting curry puffs from a particular hawker stall when he was growing up in Sinagpore. The owner of that stall was named Mr Loy, and the name is a tribute to him.
