PORTLAND | Pip’s Original Doughnuts is one of the many donut shops in Portland and stands out from the other contenders for Portland’s best donuts by focusing on simplicity. Owners Nate and Jamie Snell focus on mini donuts and simple flavours – raw honey and sea salt, Nutella and cinnamon sugar and put the focus on getting these right. Ingredients are sourced from local, independent businesses and the donuts are fried in super-heated organic soy shortening which results in donut that’s super crispy and caramelised on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside and not at all greasy. Even better, each donut is made to order, so you know what you’re eating is as fresh as it gets. All 3 of the flavours were fantastic, but if we had to choose one, it’s hard to go past the Nutella one.

It’s not just about the donuts at Pip’s Original either – the chai here is famous and uses a variety of teas and natural ingredients to come up with some unique flavours. There’s the Smokey Robinson for example with smoke, vanilla, cinnamon and clove or our favourite the Emmylou which combines lavender, chamomile and cardamom just to name a few. Our advice is to grab a chai flight which lets you try a 4oz glass of each of the 5 flavours on offer. If coffee is more your style, Pip’s Original serves Extracto Roasters coffee and, in the summer keep an eye out for the chai pops and cold brew pops.

It all happens inside a space that’s decked out in 1940s-style Americana homely memorabilia, which comes together in a way that feels genuine rather than tacky. Bottom line is that the donuts at Pip’s Original are pretty much the best version of a classic donut that you’ll find. Couple that with a tasty cup of chai or coffee and you’ll soon forget about the wait in line.
