CHICAGO | Are you looking for a great brunch spot in the Southport Corridor where Wrigleyville, Lakeview, and North Center meet? Well Southport Grocery & Cafe is a favorite of ours and it might just be what you’re looking for. The space is simple and unassuming, and on top of the tasty food in the cafe, the grocery shop is a nice place to browse for local fare. If you’re looking for some cooking inspiration, check out the preserve periodical with loads of preserves attached to recipes and ideas to get customers cooking.

All of the delicious options are made in-house from scratch with locally sourced ingredients when available. Some of our favorite morning breakfast choices include the chicken & cheesy grits from a hazard-free local farm, with a sunny side up egg and house-made strawberry rhubarb chili vinegar; and the breakfast salad made with locally grown kale and arugula, red quinoa, granola croutons, seasonal fruit, and a yogurt-poppy seed dressing. We also can’t get enough of the bread pudding pancakes and cupcake pancakes.

Afternoon brunch and lunch options are just as crave-worthy and make for the perfect weekend lunch. Our preferred dishes are: the veggie burger with beets, cucumber, tomato, and smoked onion marmalade made in the café, along with field greens, provolone, and herbed cream cheese on fresh focaccia; the ‘Southport Cuban’ with smoked brisket, ham, swiss cheese, dijonnaise, house-made giardiniera, and arugula on grilled challah; and lastly the smoked fish plate with smoked salmon, trout spread, house-made cream cheese, bialy & dilly bean, and sliced hard boiled egg.

Once a month, Southport Grocery hosts an ‘underground dinner club’ known as a Secret Supper. Those who have registered to receive notice get an announcement with the date and then can sign-up to join on a first-to-respond basis. The kitchen staff collects and develop new ides each month to serve at these special dinners, which include a seasonal flair.

New for this holiday season, Southport Grocery is sponsoring Deck the Halls 2016, whereby local artists are sharing their pieces in the shop and customers are welcome to buy the art directly of the walls. The displays feature eight artists from the Chicago area with a variety of works to please anyone looking for a unique gift for friends and family. See a piece you like? Just grab it off the shelf and take it to the register.

In addition to the in-restaurant dining and grocery shopping, the store offers catering, wholesale, gift baskets, box lunches, and online shopping. Southport Grocery and Café has won numerous awards and it’s easy to see why. Don’t be discouraged by the big weekend crowd – customers are in and out quickly and it is well worth the wait.
