LONDON | The Fine Art Society celebrated its 140th birthday in 2016, and has, over the course of its existence, championed British art and design from 1700 to the present day, and more recently, contemporary art from Asia, Australia and the US. It’s also known as being a pioneer of the ‘one-man exhibition’. Art here is not only on display, much of it is available to purchase.

Increasing rents have threatened the existence of the Fine Art Society at this site for several years now, and there has been talk that the gallery might move to another London location. While the gallery’s mission will undoubtedly remain the same, it’s well worth visiting the gallery’s Mayfair site not just for the art, but for the building itself, a lovely Grade II-listed five storey townhouse designed by E.W Godwin, one of the most fashionable architects of the day.

The gallery also has a second location in Edinburgh, which deals in Scottish paintings and sculpture from the 17th century to the present.

Edit (11/09/2018): The Fine Art Society has indeed moved from the Mayfair site and is now located at Michelin House in Chelsea, a beautiful Art-Deco building with Art Nouveau elements. The building dates back to 1911 and was the first permanent UK headquarters and tyre depot for the Michelin Tyre Company.
