CHICAGO | Lincoln Park, one of Chicago’s most iconic, beautiful, and storied neighborhoods is now home to Tobacco Road Tap Room, the first Atlantic Coast Conference (“ACC”) bar in the heart of Chicago. Originally, “Tobacco Road” was the title of a 1932 Erskine Caldwell novel about poor, rural sharecroppers in Georgia. But North Carolina, not Georgia, was the center of the tobacco industry and over the years, Caldwell’s pejorative term came to be accepted as a reference to certain North Carolina basketball programs that blossomed like a tobacco leaf in Carolina soil. Specifically, Tobacco Road evolved as an allusion to a remarkably compact 30-mile radius within North Carolina’s populous Piedmont region that encompassed Wake Forest University, North Carolina State University (NC State), Duke University and the University of North Carolina (UNC). Today that area is known as the “Research Triangle” or Raleigh/Durham greater metro.

As the success of these athletic programs grew, so too did the Tobacco Road moniker. Unlike many other sports bars in Chicago which are home to one team, Tobacco Road represents an entire athletic conference. It’s the official Chicago bar for Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech and in the process of seeking more teams.

Duke University owner, Nate Silver, wanted ACC fans to have a place to call home in Chicago. With twenty 8-inch flatscreens, 3 sound zones for game watching, and state of the art surround sound, watching games at Tobacco Road is almost like being in the stadium. The spirit of the ACC shines through not just with the drinks, but also on the food menu. Favourites of ours include the Hokie Leg (Virginia Tech), and Carolina style hush puppies.

In addition to local and Atlantic Coast beers on tap, Tobacco Road offer filtered water, wine, and craft cocktails – all on tap. ACC alumni will recognize the beers and cocktails associated with their alma maters in this fun stretch of Lincoln Avenue. The signature cocktails on tap (also known as “draft cocktails”), are pre-batched, kegged, and carbonated before being hooked up to their own draft lines and made available ready to drink directly out of the tap nozzle. A favorite of ours, the Tobacco Road Old Fashioned, is infused with actual tobacco leaves steeped in Demerara Syrup, making for a unique twist on a classic.

If you’re living in Chicago and are a fan of the ACC, we can’t think of a better place to be on game day than Tobacco Road Tap Room.
