HOBART | The say that MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) in Berriedale is one of the most important tourist attractions in Tasmania is perhaps understating its importance. Since opening in 2011, MONA has become a destination in its own right, attracting many visitors to Hobart from interstate and abroad. It’s the largest privately funded museum in Australia, and contains antiquities, modern and contemporary art from founder David Walsh’s personal collection.

Walsh has described his museum as a “subversive adult Disneyland”, and it’s easy to see why when you visit. Featuring over 300 rotating artworks across three subterranean galleries that have been carved out of a cliff face, MONA encourages thought, introspection, and questioning through art that is fun, confronting and attention grabbing. The gallery is dark and cool, featuring a 17 meter long spiral staircase that winds down to the bottom. The smell of earth, and clay fills the air as you make your way down.

As well as the art displays, the site is also home to Moorilla winery and vineyard, Moo Brew brewery, a restaurant and a hotel. There’s a cocktail bar inside the gallery itself if you want a drink or snack to break up your art viewing experience. Every summer MONA hosts the MONA FOMA festival, and in winter the Dark MOFO festival. Both feature public art exhibitions, food and drink, live music and entertainment. MONA FOMA is held primarily at MONA while Dark MOFO extends throughout the city.
