SAN DIEGO | Cantina Mayahuel North Park is a place that’s worth visiting for two reasons. One, the tacos are fantastic and two, it’s one of the best mezcal bars in San Diego. Named after the goddess of the maguey Cantina Mayahuel is a saloon styled bar owned by Larry Auman, and artist from New Jersey who decided to set up the place after studying in Mexico. There are over 100 different types of mezcal to be found here, and staff will happily put together a little tasting flight for you if you want some help in finding the right mezcal for you.

It’s not just about drinking pure mezcal here though – cocktails are thoughtful, and the margaritas in particular are balanced in a way that really show off the characteristics of the underlying spirits. Draft beers, wine and tequila are also available of course.

Food wise its a simple affair with tacos, tortas, salads, and daily specials. The deconstructed guacamole keeps the avocado, salsa and jalepenos separate so you can mix it all up exactly as you want, and the freshness of the ingredients really shines through. The corn chips are fresh, crispy and not at all oily. There’s a range of tacos on offer, each with a double tortilla filled with quality ingredients, and big enough that you’ll probably want to use a knife and fork. You can’t go wrong no matter which one you order, but we highly recommend the chicken, which is grilled with pineapple juice and chipotle sauce, topped with cabbage and lettuce, a tropical salsa, ancho mayo, and crema and hot sauce. It’s a things of beauty with fantastically intense and balanced flavours.

Other dishes include things like chicken mole, and salads with your choice of meat/seafood additions, along with daily rotating specials depending on what produce is good and fresh that day.

If all of that wasn’t enough for you, has one of the best happy hours in town. 12:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday through Friday for an affordable selection of margaritas, cocktails, shots and trio taco plates.
