SAN DIEGO | Carnitas’ Snack Shack North Park is a casual spot that serves slow food-inspired, pork-centric American cuisine, snacks and locally sourced craft beers. At the front it looks like the restaurant is nothing more than a takeout counter, but head to the back and the wooden shack opens up to a surprisingly large space full of tables, seats and benches, and an outdoor bar. There’s no table service, you just walk up to the ‘shack’, make your order and get a number.

The menu is relatively small, and varies from day-to-day depending on what co-owner and head chef Hanis Cavin and his team have been able to source that’s local and fresh that day. The tacos are one of the main reasons to visit here, and for good reason. The signature ‘carnitas’ taco is served with carnitas, 2 corn tortillas, pico de gallo, & guacamole, and is a must order. The tortillas are piled high with ingredients, and the pork is succulent and full of flavour.

Another popular dish is the ‘triple threat’, which is sure to make any pork lover’s heart palpitate. It contains pork loin schnitzel, pulled pork, bacon, pepperoncini relish, and shack aioli, all stuffed inside an Amish bun. It’s the things dreams are made of. Even the simple fries, sprinkled with Baker Shake seasoning, and served with bacon ketchup, are a cut above the usual fries you find elsewhere.

Beers are from Southern California and you can expect find sessionable brews and one-off specials from breweries like Pizza Port, Arrogant Bastard, Mission and Wiens.
