MELBOURNE | Welcome To Thornbury Northcote (yes, it’s technically in Northcote) is a permanent food truck park that’s been set up in a former card yard. It’s brought to Melbourne by the team behind Mr Burger, Homeslice, Brunswick Mess Hall and Fancy Hank’s. It combines a fixed bar offering with a lot of permanent seating (560 outside, 140 inside) and one of the first things you notice when you arrive is just how big the space really is.
The taps are tied to CUB and there’s nothing particularly special to write home about however the bottle and can situation redeems things by offering a decent variety of craft beers across all styles. A solid enough range of low to mid range spirits are also offered, along with some decent wines. Oh and there are also cocktail jugs – very important!
Nods to the site’s former automotive past can be found throughout, such as retro signs which will appeal to automotive fans and the hipster set.
The atmosphere at Welcome to Thornbury differs substantially depending on when you visit. During the day it’s a chilled out space and quite relaxing. As the day progresses things get busier until you get to the late afternoon/evening and the whole place is pumping. Locals, visitors, families, young mates – it’s a mixed crowd and nobody is made to feel unwelcome.
As mentioned earlier, the trucks rotate so whatever is on offer will vary depending on when you visit. Thankfully the website maintains an up-to-date list of who will be there in the immediate future. Regular trucks include Ramen on Wheels, Brazilian Bites, Los Diablos, White Guy Cooks Thai, Caliko BBQ, Greek Street Food, Korean Fried Chicken, Señor Churro and Mr. Burger just to name a few.
