SAN DIEGO | Bolt Brewery opened in Le Mesa at the end of 2014, and a year later opened a taproom in the more central Little Italy. It’s a small space with lots of benches and stools with a sort of semi-industrial feel that somehow feels more welcoming than you expect.
Bolt have 25 beers brewing at any given time, and these rotate across the taproom’s 20 taps. There’s a wide range of style available at any given time, with the usual combination of core range beers, seasonals and one-offs. Grab a flight and try a few to get a good idea of what Bolt do. We’re fond of the Hard Pressed Orange, a blonde ale infused with orange, and notes of honey, and the Global D, a Belgian Tripel with notes of pepper, clove, light fruit and banana. Also keep an eye out for the Bolt IPA Batch, a one-off IPA that’s brewed with a different recipe each batch.
The food menu keeps things simple with things like pretzels, wings, salads, burgers, and grilled cheese sandwiches. Tasty stuff that pairs perfectly with beer. As well as beer, you can usually find coffee on nitro too, and those who have a gluten intolerance should ask about Bolt’s gluten-reduced beers, of which there are always a few.
Staff are friendly and passionate, and there’s an assortment of board games to play if you like. The place is also dog friendly, so as long as your pet is well behaved, you can bring them in. During happy hour (4:00pm to 7:00pm) pints are $5.00 each and on Wednesdays there’s a trivia night which is always a lot of fun.
