SAN DIEGO | Fall Brewing Company is one of the many breweries in North Park and is located in a former automotive repair centre. Owners Ramon Astamendi and Dave Lively had a simple goal when the opened Fall in November 2014 – “to create a place where [they] wanted to hang out, drink the beers [they] wanted to make, and not stuff anyone’s pockets that weren’t deserving of it”. The result is a fun, open space with an emphasis on great beer and a music/design bent (Lively is an artist and graphic designer by trade).
Astamendi is the brewmaster as well as co-owner of Fall, and he had a lot of experience at places like Mission, Maui, and St. Archer before striking out on his own. Along with the core range of beers, which are usually always available on tap, there are seasonal and one-off brews, along with unique cask versions of customer favourites. A tasting paddle is always a good way to start, and gets you five beers. The Plenty For All is a malty Pilsner that’s very popular with locals, while the Spirit of 77 is a classic West Coast IPA packed with Cascade, Chinook, and Centennial hops. We’re also big fans of the Speedo’s Tiki Love God, a smooth nutty brown ale with hints of maple, and the Apocalypse Pony, and Imperial Coffee Stout on Nitro. Grab those, and one of the special beers that’s on at the time, and you’ll get a good cross section of what Fall can do.
There’s no kitchen, but sometimes food trucks are parked out the front and visitors are allowed to bring in outside food (there are lots of places that do take out close by). The place is also pet (and child) friendly meaning that you don’t have much of an excuse not to visit.
The Fall Brewing Company logo has a thumbs up on it, their tasting paddle is in the shape of a thumbs up, and after visiting the brewery, we were happy to give the place a thumbs up too.
