MELBOURNE | Collins Square is a mixed use commercial and retail development in Docklands, and takes up an entire city block. If you’re wondering why we’re talking about a development like this on The City Lane, it’s for one simple reason – the new food and drink offering in Collins Square’s food court is actually pretty good.
Spanish restaurant Bar Nacional was one of the first restaurants to open as part of the development, and has proven popular with the local business crowd looking for a Spanish inspired lunch or after work dinner/drink. The most recent development which opened in the middle of this year however, has seen the entire downstairs section of the development fill up with an assortment of food vendors.
The newest outpost of Morgan McGlone’s popular Nashville Hot Chicken joint Belle’s Hot Chicken can be found down here, as can American burger favourite Mr Burger. If it’s more of a Mexican twist you’re after then check out Super Taco. From the same team behind Mr Burger, Super Taco offers up some tasty Mexican options – we recommend the healthy Mexican salads and bowls.
Meister takes care of people’s coffee fixes with quality espresso and filter based drinks brewed using Proud Mary coffee, and a selection of breakfast rolls, healthy chia puddings, sandwiches and bagels, while Bon Bon Boy brings Vietnamese flavour to the mix. The pho can be hit and miss, but the flavoursome banh mi is always a great choice. For Greek, ENA serves up some very tasty Greek street food, featuring quality locally sourced meats cooked on a slow rotisserie over a coal fire pit.
Perhaps what’s most impressed us about the new food court at Collins Square though is the bar, Hightail. It’s run by the people behind popular food truck park Welcome To Thornbury and is a surprisingly large bar with a decent selection of mainstream and craft beers, wines and spirits, and the ability to order food from several of the nearby vendors while at the bar. It’s easy to forget that you’re at the bottom of an office development, at the side of a food court, and we were genuinely impressed when we visited.
If you work in the area, or find yourself transiting through Southern Cross Station some time, the food court at Collins Square is definitely worth checking out. The quality of food and drink options in this part of town has just stepped up a notch.
