PORTLAND | Voodoo Doughnut is one of the most famous stores in Portland, with a reputation that extends beyond the USA. Regardless of whether you visit the 24/7 branch in Kerns or the original in Old Town you’ll be faced with the same dazzling array of wacky donut flavours served in pink boxes. Why are they so famous? Well nobody was really doing gourmet donuts in Portland when Voodoo opened back in 2003 and this fact, combined with some clever guerrilla marketing and creative ideas. Regular donuts, voodoo doll donuts, penis donuts – you’ll find them all and more at Voodoo. It’s the flavours that Voodoo is famous for too – they’ve created over 100 different flavour combinations over the years using bacon, cereal, medicine and just about anything else that you can think of.

Sensory overload is the name of the game here, but there’s always the proviso that the flavour combination works. Speak to a lot of locals these days and they’ll tell you that Voodoo is “for the tourists” and the there are better donuts to be found in Portland. From a purely taste perspective this is true – our favourite donuts in town are those from Blue Star (you can read our round up of Portland’s best donuts soon) but the donuts from Blue Star are also noticeably more expensive than those at Voodoo. If you want the best donuts in Portland look elsewhere, but if you want to try a creation that probably nobody else is doing, Voodoo certainly warrants a look – just go there with the right expectations.

Regardless of you’re opinion they’re certainly doing something right. There are always lines extending outside the stores and they’ve expanded to Colorado, Texas and Taipei, plans to expand further into the USA and Asia.
