DURHAM | 21c Museum Hotels are a series of boutique hotels in the USA that double as art galleries. The Durham 21c has a setting fitting of the concept – the city’s historic Hill Building. It was built in 1937 by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Associates, the architects behind the Empire State Building, and refurbished by 21c in 2014.
It’s a beautiful hotel, but you don’t have to be a guest to enjoy the art, which is free for all to admire. The hotel’s contemporary art museum offers more than 10,500 square feet of art-filled exhibition and event space. Across the floors you’ll find seven installations, as well as artworks in elevators, restrooms, and stairwells.
Galleries are open to the public every day and exhibitions rotate, as does 21c’s regular cultural programming.
