CARTAGENA | Housed in a grand two storey colonial-era mansion in Cartagena’s old town, Alquimico Bar is one of our favourite bars in the city. It’s hard not to be wowed by the grand building when you walk inside. A large bar sits in the centre, below a large open space hugged by twin staircases. Large columns reach up to the high ceiling, and combine with distressed timber and concrete finishings, and patterned tiles, and lush red curtains.

For a different feel from the old world inspired interior, walk to the top of the stairs and you’ll find one of the best rooftop bars in town.

The bar boasts on of the best collections of rum and other spirits in town, and is famed for its inventive cocktails. Botanicals, local fruits, and house infused spirits are a particular feature of the cocktails at Alquimico. Try the El Laboratorio, a combinatoin of Altos Reposado tequila, lulo infused rum, Licor 43, lulo puree, and spicy house bitters. Also fantastic is the Painkiller – Bacardi 8 rum, pineapple infused rum, orange, coconut cream, and chocolate bitters.

The food menu is a cut above the usual bar fare too, with a focus on local and international flavours. Think roast chicken, ceviche, grilled octopus, and chocolate rum cake.

For music, it’s live DJs playing latin infused playlists of tropical funk, disco, salsa, and hip-hop, and while there’s no dance floor as such, the fun and vibrant atmosphere sees people dancing in spots around the venue.
