Ăn Đi, Docklands

MELBOURNE | Deep into Docklands, near the end of Collins Street, you’ll find Vietnamese restaurant, Ăn Đi. Named for the Vietnamese words for “let’s eat”, which is often used when inviting someone to share a meal, the restaurant is a family affair, run by owners William and Mia. I popped in the other day for What’s on Melbourne to check it out.

Ăn Đi is a casual spot, with a few tables downstairs by the bar, an airy main dining space with Vietnamese themed wall art, lanterns, and trinkets, and a further mezzanine dining area. On the menu you’ll find dishes from across Vietnam’s diverse regions, with a particular focus on the food of Hanoi.

I asked Mia which dishes she thought best reflected what her and William are doing at Ăn Đi, and she didn’t hesitate to recommend three gems. Bún Chả Hà Nội is a signature of the restaurant, and is a top notch version of the classic dish. Charcoal grilled pork with rice vermicelli, pickled veg, fresh herbs, and fish sauce for dipping.

Slow cooked, fall-of-the-bone beef ribs are another great option. The version that I tried is served with papaya salad in tamarind sauce. You’ll also find as an option in Ăn Đi’s popular phở, which uses a light, 24 hour broth. Be sure to try the cá kho, wonderfully caramelised barramundi that’s simmered and served in a rich, sweet and savoury green pepper sauce.

Other dishes include things like bò kho, a rich, curry-like stew that’s one of my favourite Vietnamese dishes; bò lúc lắc – diced beef cooked hot and fast on the work with garlic, capsicum, and onion; and Hue style spicy beef noodle soup. If you have an event, Ăn Đi’s catering is well worth a look at, with a great selection of finger food options and large share options.

To drink, it’s a compact, but solid selection of tea, coffee, alcoholic drinks, and non-alcoholic options. Cocktails, inspired by the flavours of Vietnam, including things like a Vietnamese coffee espresso martini, and the “Pinky Rosie, which blends gin, lychee liquor, rose, lemon, and vegan foam.
