AUCKLAND | Apero is a small, cozy wine bar on K Road housed in what was an old tattoo parlour. The venue’s exposed brick walls, wooden floors, and low lighting are matched with wooden furniture built by Leslie’s father, who is based in France. The result is a space that’s casual and welcoming. It’s all about creating an environment that is comfortable, based on good food, great wine, and good times. Co-owner Leslie Hottiaux runs the kitchen while her partner in life and business Ismo Koski runs front of house.
Despite ostensibly being a wine bar, the food at Apero is no slouch. Hottiaux trained as a chef in France, and the menu features an array of simple French bistro food. Everything is made on site from scratch where possible, using sustainable and free-range produce. The house made sausages are outstanding, as is the terrine of the day and the charcuterie platter. Even the simple bag of bread and butter is outstanding. Keep an eye on the specials menu, which contains a rotating selection of three dishes.
The wine list is maintained by Ismo, and contains a selection of his favourite wines from New Zealand and abroad. Impressively, about 30 of these are available by the glass at any given time.
Whether its a glass of wine or two, or a substantial meal, Apero gets things right at all levels to make it a destination worth considering.
