SAN FRANCISCO | B. Patisserie is a bakery that sells both traditional French-style pastries and more modern creations with local influences and American flavours. The space is open, bright and airy, and when you walk inside you have a full view of the expansive pastry counter, and open windowed kitchen at the back.

Co-owners Belinda Leong and Michel Suas bring a lot of experience to this local favourite, which has developed a cult following among San Francisco pastry lovers, arguably equal to that of the famed Tartine Bakery. Leong started working as a party chef at restaurant Gary Danko in San Francisco in 1999 before departing for Europe to learn from some of the best pastry chefs in Paris, Barcelona, and Copenhagen. Suas, a French native, started baking when he was 14, and has worked in Michelin starred restaurants and is the founder of the San Francisco Baking Institute, TMB Baking Company, and Thorough Bread Bakery.

The biggest difficulty is deciding what to order, and you’ll be hard pressed to go wrong no matter what you choose. The Kouign Aman here is one of the most popular items, and it’s easy to see why – the flaky doughy pastry has layers of butter and sugar folded in, and when it cooks the pastry puffs up and the sugar caramelises. Think a sugary, muffin shaped croissant. Go for the original, or try the seasonal flavour. The Chocolate Banana Almond Croissant is another favourite – everything you think that could be awesome about this pastry based on the name is correct. Also keep an eye out for the delicious 10 hour Apple Confit and Almond Streusel.

Coffee comes from local roasters Four Barrel, is available brewed a variety of ways, and is fantastic. For those looking for something savoury, a range of tartines (open faced sandwiches) and salads is also available.
