CHICAGO | Band Of Bohemia is a quirky brewery tucked away in Ravenswood, just around the corner from the local Metra station. It has eschewed the typical brewpub look and instead gone for a “grandma’s lounge room” look. The quirkiness does not end with the aesthetics, it extends to the beers themselves too so don’t come expecting just small variations on the typical IPAs.

It helps to know what to expect before you visit Band of Bohemia. The beers are unusual and have been thoughtfully crafted to be paired with different cuisines. So much so, that you can dine on a tasting menu and get a beer pairing for each course. Apart from the tasting menu, there is also bar food, small plates and larger entree dishes to choose from. Should you choose these options, the staff are well trained and only too willing to help you match up a beer with your meal choice.

The beers themselves are as diverse as they are unusual: Grilled Apple Taragon, Roasted Beet Thyme, Maitake Mushroom Wheat, Pear Fenugreek, Apricot Amber and one made from Basmati rice (The Great White Basmati). The beers can be polarising. It’s easy to see how one person may fine a basmati rice appalling, and yet someone else find it immensely intriguing.

Band of Bohemia was recently awarded the first Michelin star ever awarded to a US brewpub. It has been a welcome addition to the brewery scene in Chicago, and here’s hoping they continue to push the boundaries for many years to come.
