Bar Holiday, Carlton

MELBOURNE | Bar Holiday is a small bar in Carlton, opened by copywriter turned first time restauranteur, Matthew Hurst. It’s located on Lincoln Square, in the heart of the Melbourne’s university district, facing onto the park.

Matthew opened the bar in June 2021, just a few weeks before Melbourne was plunged back into lockdown. As a result, he’s had to pivot to more of a cafe style operation until lockdown ends, offering takeaway coffee, sandwiches and pastries.

When lockdown does end, and Bar Holiday is able to transform back into its intended form, what can you expect? Beer, wine, cocktails, and an Italian leaning food menu with things like cheese and charcuterie, pasta dishes, and Tuscan salads.

There’s two decks at the front of the bar, with live records spinning an assortment of tunes from the afternoon until late at night.

Popping past during lockdown and looking into the space, it looks really cozy and welcoming. I enjoyed visiting Bar Holiday in lockdown cafe mode, and can’t wait to return when it’s able to open as a bar.
