Bar Love, Northbridge

PERTH | Bar Love opened late this year just off the corner of Beaufort and William Street. It’s a retro, 70’s inspired cocktail bar by bartenders Pippa Canavan and Murray Walsh, who spent years together managing Mechanics Institute.

The space looks the part, with warm lighting, and a red, pink, and peach colour scheme. A chequered tile bar, hanging retro lamps, and an assortment of posters and nick knacks complete the look. The casualness and warmth of the space carries over to the service, which is friendly and fun. It’s a proper local’s bar, with people chilling out, conversing, and enjoying themselves.

Given Pippa and Murray’s time spent a Mechanic’s Institute, it’s should come as no surprise that the cocktails at Bar Love are excellent. It’s things like a Peaches & Cream Negroni; the Melon Baller, which leans on eucalyptus and Midori; and the Vamos Martini, which is an espresso martini in Mont Blanc form. There’s also a small but mighty selection of independent Western Australian wine, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks.

To eat, it’s a snack menu put together by Dwight Alexander of Peasant’s Paradice, next door. Expect things like East African spiced fries, a Peri Peri chicken toastie, and a taro and leek fold over pie with coconut curry sauce.
