HEALDSBURG | Bear Republic Brewing Company was founded by the Norgrove family in 1995 and is one of the US breweries that is known by craft beer fans around the world for their quality beers. Despite moving their production brewing to a nearby facility in Cloverdale and growing to become the 40th largest brewery in the USA, Bear Republic have stayed true to their roots and are still independent and family owned.
The Healdsburg brewpub is where it all started, and is a great place to sample many of Bear Republic’s core range, seasonal, and specialty beers. The Racer 5 IPA is one of the most awarded beers in the USA, and is a beer we had tried in Australia before. Trying it at the source however is a different story – it’s fantastic. It’s a 7.5% ABV golden IPA brewed with brewed with malted barley, wheat, and crystal malts, which help highlight the floral base of the Columbus and Cascade hops which are grown in the Pacific Northwest. A benchmark example of a West Coast IPA.
Other favourites of ours include the Kompromat, a juicy and fruit forward 9.4% ABV Double IPA packed with Hallertauer hops and the Tartare, a 4% ABV barrel aged Berliner Weiss with Goldings hops and Sonoma County Wild yeast. Keep an eye out for limited and barrel aged releases, including things that you can’t find elsewhere. If you want to try a few things, go for one of the tasting paddles. Unfortunately you can’t choose and have to go for one of the three options available – we actually visited across two days so we could try every beer on tap as we enjoyed the beers that much.
Food is designed to go well with beer and the menu features an assortment of dishes made using locally souced, seasonal ingredients. Think things like artisan cheeses and charcuterie plates, wings, mac & cheese, soups and salads, sandwiches, burgers and large plates.
