CHICAGO | Beatrix is open just about any time of day in River North serving up breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks to Chicago. It’s a favourite spot of ours for an early morning take away coffee and pastry on the way to work, and offers a menu that’s about ‘taste over trend’, featuring an array of interesting options that lean towards the mindful eating end of the spectrum.
Coffee is one of the highlights here – the coffee bar at Beatrix serves up quality coffee using locally roasted Intelligentsia and Metropolis beans. We’re particularly enamored with the honey and cinnamon latte, one of the seasonal flavored espresso-based drinks currently on offer. It uses just the right amount of flavors without being too sweet or overpowering the quality coffee base of the latte. The coffee bar also blends up freshly squeezed juices with just about every fruit and vegetable imaginable.
The pastries at Beatrix have just as much attention given to them as the coffee, and each day Beatrix bakes fresh cookies, cakes and other sweet treats. If you’ve got a food intolerance you’re covered too – there are several gluten-free and vegan options such as the Tall, Dark, and Handsome Chocolate Cake.
If you’re after something more substantial, then after 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends, the cafe portion of Beatrix opens for breakfast and lunch. The menu leans toward healthy, creative dishes such as quinoa cakes with poached eggs, cauliflower grits and eggs, and ten-grain oatmeal. It’s all very tasty. We always look for a reason to indulge in a cocktail at brunch, and we think it’s only fair that if we have a healthy entree, we should be allowed to indulge with a Spicy Bloody Mary. Speaking of cocktails, in the evenings Beatrix shifts focus to dinner service, and also operates as a bar.
