CHICAGO | Beermiscuous is a Lakeview beer spot that styles itself as a “beer cafe”, modeled after the classic cafes of Europe and casual American coffee shops. It’s a place that takes quality beer (but not itself) too seriously – Beermiscuous use refrigerated storage to prevent deterioration, minimize unwanted light exposure, serve all beer at the proper serving temperatures and in the correct glassware, and “religiously” clean their draft lines.

As you walk inside you’re faced with a long, narrow space with the walls to your left and right lined with beer fridges. Further back, past the bar, are a number of couches, stools and tables, which create a range of areas in which you can enjoy your drink. Music is at a reasonable volume and covers an eclectic range of styles – the first time we visited we heard, amongst other things, Australian hip-hop being played, which is something you don’t hear much of in Chicago. It’s the kind of place where you can sit alone and chat with the bar staff, set up your laptop and do some work, or relax with a book or a board game with friends.

Back to the beer, and there are around 350 beers available on here, covering all kinds of styles from local, American and international breweries. On the 16 taps, you’ll find many different styles of beer, mostly highlighting local breweries. There’s a chart on the wall that categorises beers by style and bitterness, which makes it easy to decide whether to order something familiar or more challenging. Conveniently, everything on tap is available in pours starting from 4oz, which means you can make your own tasting flight if you want to try a few things.

There’s no kitchen at Beermiscuous, but bar snacks like pretzels and nuts are available, and you’re allowed to bring in your own food or order delivery if you want. Also as well as being a bar, Beermiscuous is also a bottle shop – everything in the fridges is available to take home, at prices cheaper than drinking in, and all bottles are sold individually, or as part of a make your own “mixed six pack”.
