CANBERRA | Bentspoke Brewing Co. have been brewing beer since 2014 in their Braddon brewpub, and are one of the most highly regarded brewers in Canberra. Head brewer and co-owner Richard Watkins spent 17 years creating highly regarded beers at Wig & Pen before launching Bentspoke with business partner Tracy Margrain, and this experience shows in the quality of the beer.
Set over two stories, the brewpub is a welcoming space, with the brewing equipment located behind the bar and lots of wood, steel and glass. Despite the relatively small size of the venue, Bentspoke manage to fit 18 different beers on tap at any given time, with several plaques beneath the bar showing beers that have been on tap in the past. Across the taps you’ll find all sorts of beers, from the popular Crankshaft, a 5.8% West Coast style IPA, to the Big Nut, a hoppy 7.5% dark ale, and the Stratus, a hazy 8.0% Double NEIPA.
We recommend grabbing a tasting paddle (or two), which gives you decent sized pours of four beers of your choice, served in possibly the best and most useful tasting paddles we have ever seen, crafted from actual bicycle handles. The staff will happily explain what all the beers are about if you need some help deciding what to get.
The food here is impressive too. The menu features things like buffalo wings, steak, tacos, and burgers, and a decent number of vegetarian options too. It’s all quality, made using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.
If you feel like bringing some beer home with you, you can purchase some of the beer in cans, and also anything on tap in custom-made two-litre, insulated growlers.
