CHICAGO | As any local knows, it’s hard to beat summer in Chicago. Chicago totally comes alive and there is no better evidence than its wide array of Farmers Markets across the city. Looking to shop and eat locally grown and prepared food? Any day of the week there is a farmers market in one of Chicago’s neighborhoods attracting vendors from all over the Midwest (and even from across the country in some cases).

More than 30 markets are open for business in summer in Chicago. In no particular order, here are some of the best farmers markets in Chicago.

Green City Market

A staple for the city, Green City Market is Chicago’s largest and first year-round farmers market. Green City is known as an educator for the community, offering Edible Gardens, Club Sprouts, and Chef Demos, as well as a rotating list of events, encouraging sustainable farming, nutrition, and consumption of locally grown foods. The market has grown to serve more than 175,000 customers each year and has been called “the best sustainable market in the country” by Chef Alice Waters of Chez Panisse.

We recommends Abby’s Crepes, a tradition at the Lincoln Park location; there is always a line but it is well worth the wait.

Green City Market now has four locations with the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum housing the indoor winter market, and summer outdoor markets in Lincoln Park, West Loop, and The Park at Wrigley.

Logan Square Farmers Market

Logan Square Farmers Market has been open since the summer of 2005. This weekly market is now thriving and named the Best Farmers Market by Chicago magazine in 2016. We love the community spirit felt visiting the market and how it serves as an outlet for delicious and nutritious food for the Logan Square Community. We remember when the market first opened an only had a few vendors each week; today the market is open year-round, outdoors between mid-May and the end of October; indoors between November and March.

In addition to food and entertainment, the market also features free yoga classes on the western entrance to the market between 10am and 11am.

Portage Park Farmers Market

We like taking a morning to enjoy beautiful Portage Park, near the corner of Central Berteau on the northwest side of the city, followed by a stroll through the Portage Park Farmers Market. The market features music and dog adoptions, as well as the typical local vendors selling produce, baked goods, meat, dairy, and crafts.

After gathering ingredients for you weekly meals, tick another item off your to-do list with vendors offering knife & tool sharpening and watch battery changing.

Oak Park Farmers Market

We don’t often pass up freshly made donuts, and Oak Park Farmers Market draws us in every summer to start a warm weekend with a cinnamon sugar donut and stroll through the market. The donuts are made early on Saturday mornings at Pilgrim Church and benefit various local charities as well as the church and their organizations. Live bluegrass music, by local musicians, invites market patrons to sit just outside the church to enjoy along with a cup of coffee.

After a morning at the market, we like to head to Lake Street in downtown Oak Park to peruse the shops and park.

Wicker Park Farmers Market

Wicker Park Farmers Market is held right in the park, on Damen between Schiller and Wicker Park Avenue every Sunday over the summer. We recently made a stop at the market, picking up some beautiful fresh flowers and berries; afterward, we were treated to a complimentary performance by Symphony Sounds – a professional string ensemble represented by a small elite group of Chicago’s best chamber musicians. They will be back throughout the summer at the market. Find their schedule here.

Daley Plaza Farmers Market

For the more than half million people working in Chicago’s Loop, the Daley Plaza Farmers Market makes for a nice lunch break and reprieve from the office. This is the longest running farmers market in Chicago and the central location draws huge crowds every Thursday from May through October.

When you visit, a must try item are the Raclette Baguette Sandwiches served at the Baked Cheese Haus located in the market near the corner of Washington and Dearborn. Raclette is a Swiss Alpine cheese, which the vendor melts over a heat lamp, and scrapes onto freshly baked baguettes, along with your choice of toppings including ham, salami, Dijon mustard, cornichons, and chopped spring onions. Divine.

Lincoln Square Farmers Market

Just across Lincoln Avenue from the entrance to the iconic Lincoln Square’s cobblestone corridor, the Lincoln Square Farmers Market is open for business every Tuesday morning and Thursday evening throughout the summer and fall. Local artists, non-profits, and food vendors fill the municipal lot at the Western Brown line stop.

We recommend stopping by the Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits stand at the market; this Logan Square and Ravenswood pastry shop serves up both sweet and savory pie and biscuits which are not to be missed.
