CHICAGO | Situated in a wedge-shaped building in River West at a slightly confusing intersection of 5 streets sits the almost-two-year-old Black Iron Tavern. The building has glass walls running down both sides of the building, resulting in an abundance of natural light, and a view to the outside passing traffic regardless of where you choose to perch. The bar itself follows a similar configuration inside, resulting in plenty of bar stool real estate and creating an environment in which it is easy to strike up conversation with other patrons. If conversation isn’t your thing there are retro board games and break the ice over. With a name like Black Iron, the music is unsurprisingly heavy rock focused.

The beer list is concise rather than overly lengthy (12 taps and a selection of bottles), but covers all bases, with a heavy local influence. Look for the specials list usually on a chalk board on the wall for some bargain brews (think happy-hour prices). Speaking of happy hour prices (happy hour runs from 3-6pm) – each day has a different food or drink special, clearly labelled on the table menus. Such has half priced burgers on Mondays, half priced wine on Wednesdays and Fish Fry Fridays (fish & chips with a pint of Lagunitas for $18).

Throughout the week there are different events on to keep guests entertained. Tuesday night is trivia night, run by the very capable people at Brain Sportz Trivia. The night coincides with the $1 wing specials, of which you can choose from Buffalo, BBQ or Korean wings – or as we like to do, a few of all 3. Friday’s are video game night, so you can play a bit of retro Street Fighter while quenching your thirst. You just need to remember how to pull off those special moves “hadouken” moves.

The food menu has some interesting options that are above your typical pub fare. There are plenty of sandwiches and wraps to choose from, as you would hope, but they include unexpected items like Greek Turkey burger, Korean wraps, and Mix-and-match Mac & Cheese. On weekends, you can even pop in for brunch.
