NEW YORK CITY | Brooklyn Brewery is one of the most well known independently owned US-based craft breweries around, and is the brewery that we have to think for kicking off New York City’s craft beer renaissance. It was founded in 1988 by Steven Hindy (a former Associated Press Middle Eastern correspondent) and Tom Potter (a former banker) who decided a career change was in order. When the brewery launched the local craft beer scene was dire and Brooklyn Lager, a 5.2% American Amber Lager, with its rich malt base and dry hopped citrus aroma really ushered in a change.

Fast forward to today and Brooklyn Brewery’s beers can be found across the world. HQ is still in Brooklyn though as is the fantastic tasting room. Here you can try a number of Brooklyn’s beers from core range to limited and seasonal releases on tap and in bottle conditioned bottles. Along with the aforementioned lager we also love the Sorachi Ace, a 7.2% ABV Saison and the Post Road Pumpkin Ale, a seasonal 5.0% ABV beer. Just be aware of the token system that operates here. You have to purchase tokens, which can then be used to purchase beer. It’s a minor inconvenience and doesn’t really impact you enjoyment.

There’s no food at the brewery aside from some basic snacks, but you can bring you food in, or buy from food trucks that the brewery has on site Fri-Sun. Tours are also run from Mon-Thu, and there are often events on – live music gigs, tap launches and takeovers etc. You can find all the details about what’s on during any given week on the official Brooklyn Brewery website.
