MELBOURNE | I have no issues with gluten, so don’t really make an effort to seek out gluten free versions of things. During lockdown, I’ve been approached by several businesses asking for me to try their more niche products, and help spread the word.

One of these companies is Butter Mafia. They make a selection of gluten free treats that, in normal times, can be found in cafes across Melbourne. Obviously during lockdown, this side of the business had contracted big time.

In response, owner Kenn and the team have been pushing the retail side of the Butter Mafia, with delivery of the full range across Melbourne, and a limited range Australia wide. If you’re within a 5km radius of the Northcote kitchen, delivery is free.

Ken swung by a few weeks ago and dropped off two of his most popular products – some Henchman Cookies and Mob Brownie Box. I’m happy to say that neither compromise on flavour or texture.

My favourite is the Henchman Cookie. It’s full of hand cut dark chocolate chunks and peanut butter with a great balance between chewiness and crunch. As for the brownies, they’re all pretty tasty and decadent. My favourite is probably the Black Widow – dark chocolate and coffee caramel on a black velvet brownie

Definitely worth checking out regardless of whether you can deal with gluten or not.
