SAN DIEGO | Cafe Gratitude Little Italy is the San Diego location the of Los Angeles’ popular plant based cafe chain. They promote plant based eating and use no animal products, no meat and no dairy in any of their dishes (the use of honey in a few things precludes it being called vegan). Walk inside an it looks like any other cafe – not a hippy, cult-like spot that fits into a stereotype, but the kind of cafe that meat eaters might want to spend some time in. In fact the only time Cafe Gratitude gets a bit strange is when it comes to ordering. Each dish is named as an affirmation, and that’s how you have to order.

Want the crispy tortilla bites, with jerk marinated portobello, roasted garnet yams, cashew queso fresco, pinto beans, and roasted tomatillo dipping sauce? Then get ready to tell the server “I am fierce”. Want the Mexican bowl with black beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, nopales, salsa verde, cashew nacho cheese, romaine? “I am mucho” is your call. If you can get beyond that and look at the food for what it is, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Often, vegan options at restaurants are lacking, but here, they’re done with real thought and the dishes are packed full of flavour and complexity, all while being good for you. One of our bugbears is when vegetarian of vegan places try to come up with meat substitutes that more often than not end up tasting awful. Cafe Gratitude instead focuses on making the most of the 100% organic, plant based ingredients it uses. There’s nothing trying to pretend it’s chicken or beef here, and the food is all the better for it. Some of the dishes seem overdone, and forgo simplicity for complexity when it’s not really needed, but on a whole Cafe Gratitude gets it right.

Whether its a substantial meal, or just a fresh juice to provide a pick-me-up, Cafe Gratitude is well worth checking out during those times when you feel like you need to top up on your vegetable intake and want something light.
