RUTHERGLEN | Campbells Wines was founded in 1870 by Scottish immigrant John Campbell, who arrived in the Rutherglen region searching for gold during the area’s gold rush, and, after failing to make his fortune from gold, turned his mind to wine. Campbells wines is still owned and run by the Campbell family today, with the 5th generation winemakers focusing on crisp whites and robust reds, including the famous Bobbie Burns Shiraz and The Barkly Durif.
A wide range of grapes are grown at Campbells with constant experimentation occurring to find the best grapes that are suited to the terroir. Interesting, limited releases of Viognier, Roussanne, Tempranillo and Trebbiano are on offer, along with traditional muscats and topaques. The Sixties Block and Malbec are two of our favourite Campbells wines.
Campbells offers one of the most extensive tastings in Rutherglen, with a large number of wines and different vintages of the same wines available, served by knowledgeable staff who really help to guide you through the complexities of each wine, and help you understand the differences between vintages. You can even explore the cellars and do a food and wine matched tasting flight. If you want a more substantial feed, Campbells offers the ‘Campbells Hamper Box’ filled with a selection of regional cheeses, charcuterie, English cookies, Gundowring Ice Cream and more, which you can purchase and enjoy out on the lawns of the winery.
…and for all you Pokémon GO players out there, there’s even a PokéGym on site 😉
