MELBOURNE | Casa N.O.M is the new bar and restaurant by Thomas and Nicholas Welch, the brothers behind White Oaks Saloon across the road and Silverlake Social just up the road. Their third venue sees the brothers head south of the border to explore the food and drink of Latin America.
The small, low lit venue features lots of brass, cement, and a green hue throughout. To one side is the large stone bar, with stools for those looking for a drink and a quick bite, and against the other wall a tables and seats with a capacity for 35 people.
Like the Welch’s other two venues, the focus is on drinks but the food menu is no slouch. For drinks it’s Latin American spirits like tequila, mezcal, cachaca, pisco, rum and that one spirit that anyone who has travelled to Colombia will have a story about, Aguardiente. You can have the spirits by themselves, on the rocks, or as part of a cocktail – the venue does all the classics plus a few of their own creations. There’s also a decent selection of wines and craft beers, both local and Latin American.
For food, it’s things like blue corn chilaquiles – tortilla chips with kidney beans, red capsicum, vegan cheese, pickled jalapenos, green onion, spring pea guacamole, radishes, coriander, and salsa verda (with the option of beef), and Chilean-style empanadas with beef, onion, capsicum, spring onion, olives, a red wine reduction, and salsa verde on the side. Taco seasoned fries with house chipotle mayo are a great quick snack, and for those with a sweet tooth try the alfajores – a traditional sandwich cookie found across Latin America filled with dulce de leche and topped with citrus mascarpone.
Keep an eye out for the daily drink and food special, which rotates each day and gives you a great price on some of Casa N.O.M’s most popular bites and drinks.
