SAN FRANCISCO | City Beer Store opened in 2006 and since then, the bottle shop / bar has built a reputation as a must visit for lovers of craft beer in San Francisco. Walk through the unassuming entrance and down into the cozy venue and you’re faced with an enticing proposition. There’s the bar, which features 15 rotating taps full of fantastic beers and a few fridges full of rare bottled beers, and the bottle shop, which has anywhere between 500-700 bottles of beers at any given time amongst its shelves and fridges. Everything purchased in the store can be drunk at the bar.

The staff here know their stuff well, so despite the fact that it’s a craft beer lover’s dream, novices need not worry – staff will happily discuss what you like and what’s on offer to help you find the right beer for you. In the words of owners Craig and Beth Wathen “Each customer is deserving of a unique individual shopping encounter rather than a formula sell, and we work closely with our staff to provide this experience. Our hope is for beer to be treated with the same respect as a fine wine or fine bourbon.”

On the taps you’ll find beers from across the United States and sometimes further abroad. On our most recent visit the taps features beers like Damnation and Supplication 2009 from Russian River, Griffon Bruxellois from The Bruery, and New Sensation from Fieldwork. We’ve even seen beers from New Zealand’s excellent Garage Project on draft here. The rare fridge contains even more impressive gems, like single releases from Modern Times and the fabulous Nancy from Allagash.

Food isn’t the focus here, but the bar snacks are quality – regional cheeses, togarashi chex mix with nori, and candied bacon caramel corn are a few examples of the snacks which hit the spot nicely.
