SEBASTOPOL | Crooked Goat Brewing is a brewery in Sebastopol that started when friends Rich, Paul, Scott, Will, Andrew and Andy used to home brew on Friday nights after a long week’s work at their day jobs. Soon, they were sharing their beers with friends and family and by 2015 were entering home brewing competitions and showcasing their beer at various events.
The decision was made to open an actual brewery and in 2016 they opened their brewery and taproom in The Barlow, a 12-acre outdoor market district featuring a number of local food, wine, beer, spirits and craft artisans. The space is essentially a large shed – the brewing equipment is behind the bar, with tables, seats and stools on the other side and outside. Across Crooked Goat’s 16 taps you’ll find a range of beers across a number of styles, with a focus on hop forward West Coast beers.
There’s a lot to like on the taps here – our favourites include the Ibex, a smooth 7.2% ABV IPA dry hopped with Citra, Simcoe and Amarillo, and the Grain & Blood, a 9.7% ABV Double IPA brewed with fresh blood orange and dry hopped with Mosaic, Amarillo, Citra and Simcoe. Keep an eye out for special varieties of Ibex, such as the delicious grapefruit Ibex. Tasting paddles are available so you can try a few things – the staff know their stuff well and can help you put together a tasting paddle or choose a single beer for you if you like.
There’s no kitchen on site, but there are enough neighboring restaurants and local food producers nearby which has allowed Crooked Goat to offer a decent selection of bites. When we visited it was BBQ Smokehouse Bistro on offer – their BBQ beef tri-tip sandwich is fantastic.
