SAN FRANCISCO | Del Popolo started life as a food truck in May 2012, pumping out Neapolitan-inspired pizzas from a glass enclosed shipping container on a Freightliner truck. Their bricks and mortar venue opened in November 2015, and expanded the offering to include market-driven antipasti and a carefully selected list of wine and beer.
Many consider Del Popolo to be one of the best pizzerias in San Francisco and it’s easy to see why. The wood-fired brick oven (an Acunto imported from Italy) is the showpiece of the small oven, and sits as part of the restaurant’s open kitchen for all to see. It’s filled with almond wood burning at 900°F which results in a springy base with a beautifully charred, blistered crust. The trademark Margarita di bufala is a must try, with its perfect combination of crushed tomato, buffalo mozzarella and basil, and the other flavours full of locally sourced, seasonal toppings are fantastic too. Try the Broccoli Di Ciccio, topped with Calabrian sausage, mozzarella, pecorino, and red onion.
Non-pizza items are no slouch here either. Charred leeks with pickled chili, sunflower seeds & oregano are a great way to start the meal, as are Tasso spiced pork ribs with celery root remoulade, pomegranate & Brussels sprouts.
The wine list features a mixture of new and old world wines – around 40 different wines at any given time designed to go well with the food, while the beer selection is local and craft and also suits the food well.
