AUCKLAND| Depot Eatery And Oyster Bar is, as the name suggests, an outstanding oyster bar and restaurant from chef and restaurateur Al Brown. It’s all about seasonal, simply cooked share plates that are designed to be enjoyed with friends and indeed, one look at the tables and bar which are always full, show a lot of people simply having a good time.
Most of the cooking is over charcoal or hard wood, which gives that beautiful roasted flavour to the food. Oysters are fantastic – when we visited it was a choice of small, plump and creamy Orongo Bay oysters from Russell and creamy, mildly salty, clean finishing Mahurangi oysters from just North of Auckland. Looking beyond oysters, and its things like hapuka belly with eggplant kasundi, lime & toasts, lamb sweetbreads with lentil dhal, red chilli & goats curd, and wood roasted bone marrow with parsley & shallot salad. It’s all very tasty, with a real focus on letting the quality of the produce shine.
The wine list features a few wines on tap, as well as a decent selection of around 20 wines by the glass if you don’t want a whole bottle. They’re mostly selected by Brown and are all quality and mostly local. The same goes for the beer list, which is mostly local craft.
Whether it’s a drink and a snack while solo, a full meal with friends, or any combination in the middle, Depot is a place we highly recommend visiting.
