CARTAGENA | Colombia produces some of the best rum in the world, and El Arsenal: The Rum Box is a fantastic bar in which to become acquainted with the diversity of rum in the country.

The bar, owned by chef turned mixologist Abraham Dau, focuses on Colombian rum, which can be enjoyed in a variety of ways. Tasting flights give you an opportunity to learn about the differences between various rums. Tasters are paired with specialty Colombian chocolates and other ingredients, which provide an opportunity to explore the interplay between the flavours of both. For us rums from the distillers Dictator and Parce are a must try.

Of course, there’s also an assortment of rum based cocktails on offer – if you tell the bar staff what flavours you’re looking for they’ll create a cocktail for you on the spot. For those not looking for rum, there’s also a small selection of other high quality spirits from around the world, along with a few beers and wines.

Given Dau’s previous experience as a chef, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the food at El Arsenal is very good too. Think dishes designed to share with a Colombian twist, like sweet roasted baby peppers with sea salt, pork chops with sour guava BBQ sauce, and cheese and charcuterie boards.

Combine the above with a friendly, laid back atmosphere, and an assortment of board games, there’s no reason not to visit.
