PORTLAND | The Portland Farmers Market was established 25 years ago and is a must visit for anyone who wants to get a snapshot of why Portland has a reputation for fresh, high quality food. While the Portland Farmers Market actually has a few location, it’s the flagship at PSU that’s open all year round that you’ll want to attend as a visitor. It’s Oregon’s largest Farmers Market and with around 140 stalls showcases a wide range of produce from the region’s farmers and artisan food producers. The atmosphere is fun and cheerful, and you get a real community feel when you’re there. It’s clear that the vendors and customers are genuinely passionate about Oregon’s produce and artisan food scene.
You can sample signature wares from local well known names like Alma Chocolate’s toffee and Olympia Provisions‘ charcuterie and Marshall’s Haute Sauce’s flavoursome sauces. There are also a number of people cooking food fresh on the day – the breakfast burrito Enchanted Sun is worth waiting in line for, while Via Chicago’s deep dish pizzas also attract plenty of hungry locals. Another popular dish is the “Reggie Deluxe” from Pine State Biscuits – one of Portland’s top 5 purveyors of biscuits and gravy.
It’s not just about sampling and buying food either – the market features chef demonstrations, kids’ cooking classes, market music and a lineup of food education events throughout the day.
Check out the Portland Farmers Market website for further details about some of the smaller markets, or markets that are held on different days, such as the Wednesday market, which runs from May through November, on a different section of the Park blocks.
