NEW YORK CITY | Flex Mussles originated as a seafood shack in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, before Bobby and Laura Shapiro, along with their daughter Alexandra opened in Manhattan’s Upper East Side in 2009. In 2010 the Greenwich Village location opened and regardless of which of the two New York City locations you visit you’ll you’ll get pretty much the same offering – a menu centred around fresh, seafood and Prince Edward Island (“PEI”) mussels.
Flex Mussles serves mussels cooked in a variety of ways using 23 seasonal and globally inspired sauces. Sauces range from the simple Classic – white wine, herbs, garlic, to more complex varieties like Thai – curry coconut broth, lemongrass, kaffir lime, coriander, lime, ginger, garlic, and Parma – parmigiano cream, lemon, scallions, toasted garlic, crispy shallots.
For those who don’t want mussels, there’s still a lot to recommend here, with a menu full of fresh seafood dishes. Think lobster rolls, oysters, tacos, fish and chips, and ceviche. If you’ve got a sweet tooth you can’t go past the very popular doughnuts – a selection of flavours including Fluffernutter, PBJ, Salted Caramel, Meyer Lemon, and Smores served hot with strawberry Vanilla Bean Dipping Sauce.
For drinks its a quality selection of local and international wines, craft beer and cocktails.
Prices can get a bit steep here, so our tip is to visit during happy hour when oysters are $1 each, and offered with a small selection of other items and a selection of discounted drinks.
