CHICAGO | Fountainhead is a Lincoln Square bar dedicated to good beer, good whiskey, and good food. The homely, wood and curtain laden tavern like venue takes all three things seriously, making particular effort to know about the people and producers behind what they stock and sell. The result is fantastic food and drink, and very knowledgeable staff who can tell you almost everything you want to know about anything on the menu.

The beer list contains 25 beers on tap, two hand pumps, and around 180 bottles and cans. It’s an assortment of local and imported brews, mostly from independently owned breweries like Boulevard, Three Sheeps and Wild Beer Co. Beyond the impressive beer selection, the other main reason to visit Fountainhead is whiskey. There are around 155 whiskeys and 85 scotches, ranging from the familiar to the unfamiliar, the affordable to the expensive. For wines its about 18 white, red and sparkling options, with a similar number of ports and sherries, most of which are available by the glass.

The food is elevated gastropub fare with a focus on the providence of ingredients. Expect things like poached lobster devilled eggs with piquillo pepper and chipolte aioli, a grilled rosemary marinated chicken thigh sandwich with provolone cheese, pickled cauliflower, onion, agurula, and garlic aioli, and a meat and cheese board with spicy pickled cauliflower, focaccia and ciabatta.

Whether its for a meal an the ambience downstairs or a quite drink on the rooftop, Fountainhead is one of our favourite Chicago bars. Keep an eye out on Fountainhead’s social media channels for details of events. They often have tap takeovers, beer and whiskey tastings, and events where producers come in to talk.
