AUCKLAND| Ask a local where to find the best gelato in Auckland, and more often than not the answer will be Giapo. Since opening 9 years ago in Civic (they relocated to the current spot in 2017) the gelateria operated by Italian immigrants Annarosa Petrucci and Giapo Grazioli has been famous for its high quality, flavorsome, creamy delights, serving over 1,000 customers a day.
Graziolo fuses technology, art and science when creating his gelato, resulting in some unique flavours and creations. Think fries served with either salted caramel or coffee gelato, rock melon spaghetti on sheep yoghurt, or chocolate and blue cheese. Of course, it’s not all about experiementation and unexpected flavour combinations. The classics are all available here, and are as good as anything you’ll find in Italy – tirimisu, baccio, and salted caramel are all fantastic.
Keep an eye out for Giapo’s famous one-off creations. Past ones have been based on things like Auckland’s Sky Tower the Kiwi (bird), and the Colossal Squid at the Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa.
