MELBOURNE | The Great Northern Hotel has been a favourite amongst Carlton North pub goers since 1883 for many reasons, and when you enter the historic building you see a pub that very much feels like an old pub. There’s a bar section at the front, the main dining section in the middle and out the back one of the best, most spacious beer gardens in town. The front bar is full of Aussie Rule memorabilia and there’s always sport of some kind being shown on the TVs at the bar and in the beer garden. The Great Northern is also the official home of the Fremantle Dockers supporter’s club in Victoria, so expect to see lots of purple when the Dockers are playing.
On to the most important thing about a pub, the beer, and the range at the Great Northern is anything but traditional. In 2009 Alistair Carragher, who helped set up Feral Brewing in Western Australia, took over the reigns at the Great Northern and proceeded to turn it into one of Melbourne’s top craft beer venues by increasing the number of taps to 21. Along with the one beer that’s always been here, Carlton Draught, you can find a range of local and international craft beers at the Great Northern and the rotating taps means there’s always something new on offer.
The Great Northern has also, in recent years, built a reputation as having a bit of a US focus on the taps, and it’s one of the only places in town where you can find Lagunitas beers on tap – the A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale is one of our favourite go-to beers.
Food is classic pub grub that’s designed to go with beer, and often uses beer in the ingredients. The parma here is always on point, while the steaks are also very popular. Service can be tetchy here at times, especially when the place gets busy, but there’s enough that the Great Northern gets right most of the time to keep people coming back.
