SAWYER | Greenbush Brewing Company was founded in 2011 by Scott Sullivan and Justin Heckathorn and has built up a reputation over the years for its well balanced, high ABV beers. In fact, no beer that Greenbush ever brews is allowed to be less than 6% ABV. From the core range, we like the “Brother Benjamin”, an Imperial IPA balanced with local honey, and the “Red Bud”, an unusual but tasty copper wheat ale.

If you want something that’s not part of the core range, check out the constantly rotating selection of seasonal, rare, and “experimental lab beers”. The “Unicorn Killer”, which is only available during the fall, is one of the better pumpkin ales that we’ve tried and is full of brown sugar, cinnamon and more. Another worth trying is the barrel-aged “LTD”, brewed to mimic an Old Fashioned cocktail, with a “twist” of orange and aromatics designed to replicate bitters, then aged in whiskey barrels. Tasting paddles are of course offered, in generous pours too.

If the main taproom is too busy, check out the Annex across the street, which features outdoor patio seating, Bocce courts, and a fire pit for those colder days. Food here is no afterthought either, with the menu featuring a range of house smoked meats and other food designed to go well with beer – we recommend the deep fried Wisconsin cheese curds and the low and slow smoked beef brisket.

Something else worth noting, if you plan to go back at least once a year, is the Friends with Benefits Mug Club. For a one-time payment of $60, there are several perks for life: a numbered mug which will stay in Greenbush only for your use, discounted pints and growlers, as well as invitations to members-only events.
