MELBOURNE | World Cocktail Day is on this Saturday 13 May, but why restrict your cocktail celebrations to one day when you can spend a whole week getting involved? Well ok, we can think of a few reasons as to why you might not want to be drinking cocktails every night of the week, but you get the idea. Today is the start of World Class Cocktail week, and over the next seven days, the spotlight will be on some of Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane’s best bars, restaurants, and bartenders, with masterclasses, tastings, and tutorials highlighting all that’s great about cocktails.

We were invited to the preview event at 1806 Bar, where guests were treated to a five course meal matched with cocktails. Head chef Nuno Gabriel and his team worked closely with the bar staff to create a menu that was very well thought out, and used the food and cocktail combinations to really take diner’s taste buds on a journey. Our favourite pairing was the dessert, a “Birds Nest” of quince, pear, pine nuts and pistachio matched with a delicious coconut infused Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve cocktail with orange & thyme oleo saccharum, chocolate bitters and campfire smoke.

For Melburnians, 1806 will be running the degustation this Thursday, and it’s one of the events we can wholeheartedly recommend. Other highlights for us include Black Pearl X Bulletin Place, which sees Melbourne’s Black Pearl and Sydney’s Bulletin Place doing a two night bartender swap, while Vaporetto Bar & Eatery are taking their kitchen and bar to the sea on a 12 May Venetian cicchetti rivercruise. For a Meixcan inspired event, check out Mexican Tequila and Tapas at Hotel Jesus on 13 May.

Check out the official website for full details about what’s on and when in your city.
